first make a differences between the armourd ( the 250 and the 251 ) non armored half track ( the small kettenkraftfarhrad , the demag 3 ton and going up to the massive famo 18 ton )
Armored thy where build on the chassis of the standard non armored half tracks and had a thin plating to withstand gunfire and shrapnel The 250 could transport 2 crewman's and 4 men in his standard role and the 251 a crew of 2 and 10 troops but when used in a different role this affects the number of personnel that could have a ride in them
The non armourd half tracks like the Kettenkraftwagen could transport a total of 3 men but a half track that was designed for towing artillery pieces could take the total crew of that piece along with a total of up to 15 men And the famo designed to recuperated the broken down panzer's could take the crew of that panzer also along

It depended a lot on exactly which halftrack. But a general purpose troop carrier could carry 12 men. For the Germans this would have been the SdKfz 251. However the 251 was built in a huge number of variants for different roles, each with different crew size and weapons or equipment.

The US Army was quite similar in it's use and construction of halftracks, with the M2 and M3 model lines.

I see where The Savage Jaw cited MY German WWII halftrack site. Thanks!

The SdKfz 251 - m.Schutzenpanzerwagen (medium armoured personnel carrier) was the most numerous German infantry halftrack. The standard IPC version 251.1 could carry 12 infantry.

As you can see, there are MANY kinds of halftracks:

But from what I've gathered, it seems like they could fit anywhere from 6-12 - depending on power and obviously, room.
