we were thinking of moving to california. fresno seems to be in a nice location and statiscally the crime isn't bad. plus the apartments are moderately priced. but i would like some input from people that live there or have visited. thanks.

Apartments are moderately priced for a reason. It has really bad air; much worse than Los Angeles. It's in an agricultural valley that traps polution; especially bad in summer. It's hot, it's dusty; you are nowhere near the ocean; great distance from any real city; no nightlife; no attractive natural areas to compensate for distance from the city; depressing; gangs all over the place; poor economy. I can't think of even one reason to live there, as you can find much nicer areas in the U.S. to live in for comparable real estate costs.
Oh, almost forgot, if you have kids, the schools are very bad and there's nothing for them to do but get into trouble. And Fresno State is a joke; worst academic performance of all the California State Universities. In my profession its well-known for it's graduates having the highest failure rate in the statewide licensing exam. Don't have the most current figures, but at one point less than 5% passed an exam that roughly 40% pass statewide.
Finally, if you are looking for a "Calfornia experience" I don't think that the Fresno area will give you that. I don't believe you will be happy if you relocate there.
If you think I paint too negative a picture, please drive/fly out there FIRST before committing to relocate there. Make sure to do it in summer so you can see if the air polution will be tolerable by you. If you see the place and think it's for you then more power to you. But if you see the area and become discouraged (which I'm betting is more likely) you will have saved yourself some aggrevation.

I live an hour south of Fresno. I don't know what statistics you're reading but there is quite a bit of crime there. But like in any other city it all depends on what part of town you live in. If you come from a large city you'll fit right in. If you don't then you will hate the traffic there. Fresno has a University there, it has a great shopping mall, River Park (shopping area), I think they even have botanical gardens. It's a nice place over all.

Yeah, Fresno and the entire central valley sucks bad, but the closer you get to the Sierras the nicer things get. I hope you speak spanish.
