You can go directly and, if you wish, get your MS along the way while enrolled in the Ph.D. program.

most employers like to see a student who attends a couple of institutions - that is because each institution offers a little different perspective on the area of study. If for example, you want to specialize in counseling, you might choose a different place than a person who wants to specialize in testing psychology.
So, take a look at the program that are offered at differnt universities - and I'd suggest - make sure you have at least two schools. That does not preclude getting a MS & PhD at the same place.
Generally, schools that offer a career path of study will offer the MS as a stop along the way to a PhD. This is a good thing in case "life" gets in the way of completing a PhD. Life has a way of interrupting our plans. If you go for the MS to PhD you will have something in your hands, instead of listing on a job application a bachelor's degree and a bunch of graduate school credits, but no degee. This is also helpful in case you don't agree with the line of studies at your chosen institution. You can at least cut your ties with a masters degree in your hand.
good luck

In the history field, most schools don't even offer a terminal MA program, so one has to apply directly to the Ph.D program. I have a feeling something similar can be done in the pyschology field, whereby you apply for the Ph.D program and are awarded a Master's degree after the first year or so. Check with the Psychology departments at the schools you are interested in and also consult with your current advisor.

depends on the field, in most cases you need a masters but if you have experience you may be able to surpass a masters, in Psychology you need a masters but in other majors like technical and manufacturing you can go from BS or BA to PHD

You can register for a PHD instead of a Masters. But you could go either route.
Good Luck.

Once you have your masters then you could be licensed LMHP and have some income while getting that PhD. I think it gives more credibility.
