My daughter just returned back to school (1st grade), and my brother bought her a Bratz alarm clock. She absolutely LOVED it! It made her feel very "grown up". She sets it every night before bed and it makes her very proud that she wakes up every morning on her own. It was a great back to school gift.

I remember one year I got a Back-to-School Barbie! I think it may have been a limited edition, but she was so cute in a little plaid school girl skirt and she came with a bookbag and stuff. If you go to Toys R Us or another store like that, look in the doll aisle and I bet you'll find a doll dressed for "back-to-school," which would be the perfect kindergarten gift!

Is there a really super special school supply you could buy her? That way if she is starting to feel overwhelmed at school she could look at it and know how proud you are of her for being such a big girl and how smart you think she is and it would make her day better. Worked with my niece. Might even be a sterling silver necklace and charm. Not to expensive though in case of loss and a really snazzy special pack of pencils.

I have 2 great grand-daughters ages 6 & 4. I dont know about your neice, but they love Dora the Explorer. Pretty much anything with her on it is guaranteed to make her smile. They have a wide variety of things like little purses or tees she could take or wear to her first day. I'm sure that once you see all of the choices, you'll see one that you think she would like.
Godspeed to your neice on her journey.

I got my son a new Lego kit for his first day this week. It was easy for me since he's crazy for them. Do you know what she's really into? If not, I'd go with the giftcard as well, but if you do know that shows more thought, IMO.
Good luck!

Buy her a box of craft, they have a paint, stickers, crayons, gel pens, and etc. in them. Then buy her a big painting/drawing pad. Then buy her some appropriate c.d's for her to listen to when she is painting or drawing. Art and music simulates a child's creativity.
p.s: Make sure the paint is washable tho. =P
