Yes, it is possible but not by sitting on our butts or blogging on YA. We need to (I am already) make pests of ourselves by constantly writing, calling and emailing our representatives in Washington with opinions on every issue and, if you have time, on every bill. I usually stick to the major bills only.

Encourage everyone you know to do the same. Get on the blogs and emai. Text message, phone, whatever you have to do but get everyone to do this. Make them have to get twice as many people to handle mail at the capitol because of the volume. They may need an upgraded server to handle all the emails and staff to monitor them. Let's make them add lines to their local offices and their Washington offices too. Find cell phone numbers if you can and bug them that way too. They need to listen to us. Just voting once every couple of years isn't enough democracy takes work and constant attention from the governed. Otherwise we lose control to those who do make themselves heard by the reps.

We all have only 3 people to be in touch with in Washington. We have 2 Senators and a House member. If you don't know who they are look it up on Senate.gov, House.gov or check the front of your phone book in the government pages.

Dictatorships depend on strict obedience and nothing said by the populous. Democracy depends on constant dissent, discussion, differences of opinion and all in the open. In a representative democracy (democratic republic) as we have our voice is heard through our representatives. They cannot speak for you if you don't tell them what you want them to say. They cannot do for you if you don't let them know what to do.

So if you are tired of the "bull poop" than start writing and calling now. Keep doing it until they listen. Remember you won't always have it your way. You will win some and lose some but keep trying. Get others to understand that too.

If you don't like corporations, don't buy their products and don't use their services. Almost anywhere you live, you should be able to find whatever you need at mom and pop stores and for most products, you should be able to find something not made by a big corporation. There will be some types of products and services that you can't get except through a corporation, like telecommunications and automobiles, but you have to remember that this type of product or service is probably of a nature that only the corporate structure made it possible for it to be delivered to mass markets. You can choose to go without these products and services if you feel that strongly.

I prefer to shop at corporate stores, because their products are cheaper, and their profits go to their stockholders, who are usually middle class retirees or workers with a little bit of money in a pension fund, while mom-and-pop store owners are usually quite wealthy, but you're entitled to do whatever you want. As for the politicians, vote for the candidates you like best, or run for office. Contribute money to candidates who support the same issues as you, so as to dilute the influence that the big donors have. If you and everyone like you all have the discipline to do this, and you're really a substantial fraction of Americans, then you'll be able to take back the country.

The term "We The People" has become more "I the Person". Not many people care too much anymore about the rest of humanity. True enough that there are plenty of people out there who really care, but as for the average citizen, we've become so jaded and complacent that we just don't care. As for ways we can "Combat" the politicians? We can show them who still has the power in the country. We are the ones that vote for the morons, unfortunately the latest groups of politicians to run were more "Idiot vs. dummy" instead of "intellectual individual vs. intellectual individual". Politicians are more concerned with trying to look good rather than trying to do what is best for their country. And as for Big Corporations; they are the ones that fund the politicians, so I don't think we can really get them "out of Government" so to speak. Something we CAN do about it? Speak out. It's one of our Constitutional Rights under the Bill of Rights, but "We the People" don't use it very often. Every American has a voice, it's just a question of whether or not one chooses to use it. If we try to prove to them that we can function without them, they will try "any means necessary" to shut us down. I am tired of the all the "bull poop" but it's very hard to get the rest of the cowed people to see the light.

The love of money is the root of all evil. We need to get money out of the election process entirely. We need to eliminate the need for money in the campaign process.

Politicians have to pander to big-money corporate donors in order to get enough cash to run an effective campaign. That is the relationship that puts politicians in cahoots with the big corporations, unions, PACs, and lobbyists.

If we made the system so that candidates don't have to pay anything in order to run a campaign, then they would never have to collect money, never have to pander to the special interests, and would be totally at the mercy of their constituents, which is exactly where they ought to be.

Jefferson suggested a revolution every 10 years. While I haven't seen people buy up arms and storm Washington in my time, I've seen people shake it up by sending radical people in there. So, the best way to do it, since none of us want to end up in Supermax prison is to find a candidate who agrees with most of what you want to see done and do everything you can to get him/her elected.

And note to Bugeyes: I've gone to college, had a few jobs and opened a business or two in my time. If this girl is on fire about the way politics are nowadays, then count your blessings that someone is paying attention to more than who Lindsay Lohan is getting high with.

Well judging by the whining comments, you are the blame for it all.
However, I agree with you. The people need to take back the power. Government has gotten too big, complex, inefficient, expensive, and unapproachable.
Our founding fathers and the brave people of other nations revolted over such tyranny and won.
If you want to start a revolution, I will join you.

I also agree with punxy_girl. Maybe she will join us. That's 3!
God bless the PEOPLE of America!

We can, but I doubt we will. Why? Well, we are pretty spoiled and lazy for one thing. We are not willing to give up our fancy SUVs, multiple TVs, designer clothes, dinners out, and so on and so on ad naseam. The reason I note this is that the only way to influence big corporations and government is via the pocketbook. One example: gas prices--they've jumped phenomenally. But we drive the same amount and still the SUVs. Are we writing our representatives to complain about their record profits? Not most of us. Sitting on our butts and taking it like good little boys and girls. So again, we could but we won't.

We feel helpless because we feel like we are too weak to take on the 'Big Guys". Everybody said Goliath was too big to hit, but David said this guy too big to miss.

We need to stop re-electing the same crooks... and they are ALL crooks if they run for re-election. Public service is a brief civic duty, not a career. Never re-elect anyone!

If voting changed things it would be illegal.
