Freud is called the father of psycho analysis. In previous questions I asked about peoples beliefs about some of Freud's sexual theories-sort of. The answers I got back leads me to believe Freud is no longer respected much for his work in psychology at least over his theories about sexuality.

Unfortunately he isn't respected as much anymore, but i think this is almost tragic. I think people discard his theories so aptly because its almost fashionable to not like Freud anymore, and lets face it, no one wants to admit they want to rape their Mother and kill their Dad.

Personally i think much of his Psychoanalysis work is amazing, and the fact you can apply it to the present speaks for his brilliance really. People overlook all of his other work because they are so hell bent of his Oedipus Complex, and its a shame that intelligent people become the perpetrators of fashionable knowledge...

Psychoanalysis isn't just a Freudian technique.

Generally what happens in psychoanalysis is that the patients problems become easier to explain to the patient as a relationship with the doctor slowly develops. It is called "transference." Developing this therapeutic relationship takes time... and is almost an art form. And the best "artists" stand high above the worst ones.

There are other kinds of "talk therapy." This isn't really like analysis at all. What usually happens here is that a patient presents a symptom that is troubling them. The doctor usually extinguishes that problem in a dozen visits or less.

I believe that he "broke ground" on these theories but was unable to pin-point anything solid. Like other scientist and psychologist through out history Freud started to have the general idea of how our brains work but didn't have all the answers. Understanding the human brain is an ever expanding science.

Well, I think people misinterpret Freud theories about sexuality, if they can just discard the ignorancy and stop and think, they would realised what he really meant by this. If they can focus less on the Oedipus Complex and focus on the other work he did.

After all, he is the one who laid the grounds of psychoanalysis and contributed a lot to it.
