I have a CD that I swear worked before but now when I put it on it appears as if its blank. I wanna know if its because its too scratched or can CD's go blank?

If the stratch is over the part of the CD that holds the directory information, and the reader can not see that information, then it will think the disc is blank.

Yes, a scratch can make a CD appear to be blank.

This may sound strange, but...you may be able to fix the CD using baking soda "toothpaste". Mix a little baking soda with water and make a "paste". Put some on a toothbrush and scrub over the stratches. The abrasive paste will often polish down the edges of the stratches to where the CD's laser will be able to shine through the stratch. You might be able to get the CD to load one more itme so that you can copy the files off it and on to a new CD. (It probably won't resurrect the CD for continually usage.)

Good luck....

The CD Media that is being read is nothing but the film on the top of the disc. The plastic disc is just a holder for the film. If this plastic is scratched, then the laser cannot read the material underneath it accurately.

The magic scratch remover devices at the big box stores actually do a pretty good job of polishing out these scratches and restoring CDs.

Yes - your media could appear blank if the laser cannot read it.

Best of luck.

Yes. If a CD has either enough scratches, or scratches in the 'right place', the CD won't work.

Definitely. I can't tell you how many times I've had that happen to me. The system just interprets it as blank because it's too scratched up to even scan properly I suppose.

Correct post #1.
Try it in another player though, another one MAY be able to read it. Copy everything off it if one does though & make a backup.

My pc wouldn't run a certain disc, but my girlfiends laptop would, so I made a copy with her pc & the copy ran fine on mine.

Try it, nothing to lose!
