In a two party system which is effectively the US system, being an independent voter is effectively meaningless for they have no real power ,no agenda, nothing but their "anti" vote .
Only a multi party system gives "independent" voters some semblance of a choice,of an agenda and a power base.
The US is in fact one of the most "un-democratic" countries of all the democracies .This for a host of reasons including your two party system (which is just one party away from a dictatorship) and the fact that the Founding Fathers thought that the masses were so dumb/ignorant and un-trustworthy ,that they made sure YOU could not elect your own bloody President.

In a word, yes. What can you do when the Republican agenda runs off the rails, but the Democrat is a shallow opportunist?
At least this Administration has made it easier to choose. Any Democrat could do better, except perhaps Al Sharpton.

I used to be an ardent democrat, then they disappointed me multiple times in a row, and do so to this day. Republicans have been a constant disappointment to me. However, I wouldn't declare myself any party at all. Instead, I decide based on candidates at this point, completely independent of party affiliation.

Yes... however, I am still a conservative. The majority of the republican party is not conservative as the majority of the democrat party is not liberal.
