What I mean is, can you clean your LCD screen without worrying about damaging the LCD since there might be a screen in front of the LCD itself?

Too much pressure using the wrong kind of cloth will most likely scratch your display and could even burn some of its pixels.

Mixing up your own cleaning solution is very easy and will actually save you quite a few bucks. You only need 2 ingredients- 70% Isopropyl alcohol and Distilled Water. Mix the Isopropyl alcohol and distilled water in equal parts (50/50) inside an empty Windex-like bottle. Do not use tap water! Doing so will leave white smears on your screen after cleaning it up because of the dissolved minerals inside the water. When finished mixing, just close the bottle using the "spray" adaptor that comes attached to it.

Next, you will need to find a good, soft piece of microfiber cloth to clean your display. Avoid paper tissues at all cost! Using those on your screen would be just like scrubbing sandpaper on it and may scratch it permanently.

Start by turning off your screen. Dampen your piece of soft cloth with your cleaning mixture and then wipe the display gently from top to bottom. Never spray liquid directly onto the LCD. When you're done, wait a few minutes to let your screen dry, and then turn it back on. Voila, you're done!

Cleaning a laptop screen is a bit different then cleaning a normal glass monitor. Martin's answers has some very good points too.

In cleaning a laptop screen you want to use only a soft anti-static type cloth and use a little bit of warm water or alcohol mixed with water.

Dip your anti-static cloth into the warm water, do "not" spray anything directly onto your laptop monitor as it could place moisture into the electronics of your laptop.

If you're using an old Windex bottle, make sure you rinse it out very good as Windex can damage an LCD screen and is not recommended to use.

You can also buy special screen clean wipes. Just do a search at your favorite online computer store and see.

I personally use a can of compressed air to dust off my monitors followed by using an anti-static cloth, like a cloth that cleans eye glasses, and gently rub. When I'm not using my monitors, with the power off, I then cover them with an old pillow case cover.

Occasionally I will also put a little Armor All on soft cloth and rub it on the monitor and screen to keep the luster up.

A glossy screen only has a coating of varnish like material on the LCD. So as long as your just using water and a cloths and nothing with ammonia you should be fine.

The only difference is the non-glossy screens have a roughened surface so that they do not reflect as clearly.

If anything I would suspect that glossy screens would be more susceptible to damage than non-glossy and should be treated and cleaned with greater care.
