Small claims court, bankruptcy court, probate court. The losing side of a legal case has the right to appeal. The highest court in the land is the United States Supreme Court and it is located in Washington DC. The Supreme Court was established in 1789. Its primary purpose is to hear appeals from the highest state court in each state and the federal circuit courts. Nine justices preside over the United States Supreme Court. At this time there are eight men and one woman on the High Court. Trial judges preside over federal district courts and state trial courts. There are courts of appeal in both the federal and state systems. They are presided over by judges or justices (appellate judges).
