Which Drive Needs To Be The Slave?
Which Drive Needs To Be The Master?

Which Drive Will Be Assigned To Drive Letter D:\ ?
Which Drive Will Be Assigned To Drive Letter E:\ ?.

Note: I Want To Read From The Top, And Write To The Bottom.

Putting them both on cable select will work regardless of what is where.

The top drive should be the master and the bottom drive should be the slave. The end of the cable should be in the top drive, with the midway port on the bottom. This cable will be the same way regardless if you do master/slave or cable select.

Drive letters - you can assign whatever you want in windows

Right click on my computer - go to manage
Removable devices
Right click on drives to change or reassign letters as you like.

Drive letter assignment has no bearing on this and can be changed at any time.
If you want the reader on top and the burner on the bottom you need to check the cable you are using as to the master/slave position. Usually the master is on the end - making the top ROM the master.
Everything else does not make a difference.

Master - slave question: It does not matter.

Generally it is better to put the later/faster/higher IDE function drive as the master.

Master will probably be D:
Slave will probably be E:

Unless one is already installed, in which case the new one will take the next letter.

XP allows you to reassign drive letters.

The DVD writer needs to be the master, the other drive slave, then install the drives where you like !!

Well put the jumper on slave on the Sony "Top""E"
And Master on the Pioneer one "Lower" "D"
Sony will read And Pioneer Will write.
