It irritates me depending on how it is used, I never, even in text messages type in text language, mainly because I prefer using the language I have spent nineteen years on this planet learning and studying and it would be a complete waste abbreviating everything.
What I hate more is when people actually speak text language and say things like 'defo' in everyday speech. Or when people write letters using it and send e-mails overflowing with 'lol's 'omg's and 'pmsl's!!!
I got an e-mail from a friend I am at uni with yesterday and it was written completely in text language, grrrr!

I hate "txt spk" and never use it - even in text messages. I despair sometimes when I read in the papers about grammar and language being ignored in schools these days, and that employers are having to start from scratch regarding what should be a basic of education. Society is developing a generation of illiterates, who communicate in grunts.
Read Lynne Truss' "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" - her campaign for the proper use of grammar and the apostrophe.

Our Labour government is hell bent on producing fantastic figures of achievement to show to the general electorate, thus hoping to convince the majority that our youth are getting more intelligent year on year, and that they are responsible for this by putting into place the best education system in all of Europe! I have never known the human brain to evolve so quickly as under Labour!
Unfortunately they have actually managed to convince our students and their parents that this is the case! It makes me fume that we the older generation are far more clever than our children and yet our examination grades are lower. Our children can therefore gloat at our inferiority and will take no advice from a parent who only achieved a B in English O' level and not an A grade GCSE!!! There is no decent future for this country that I can see.

I agree. I don't know which is worse though teenagers cause there lazy and unable to spell the full word or adults using it to try to act younger. My dad is 52 and he uses text speak and it bugs the hell out of me. I'm 27 and I have no clue what he is trying to say. The schools don't help the English I did at school and the English my niece's and nephew's do are different. They don't do as much and its not as difficult. Most kids these days have no clue who Shakespear or Chaucer or Keats is. Its such a shame.

It's pathetic.
I was once a mentor at work for people taking NVQ courses and used to get Emails and text messages full of such twaddle all of the time.
People soon learned especially coming up to their deadlines when I returned their messages unanswered explaining that I only spoke English and didn't realise that we had some overseas students on the course.

Haha, I tend to agree. It does really get under my skin when I read questions from obvious teens who think it's cool to type in "text language". The text message is meant to be short and abbreviated, but when it spills over to real-world writing then it is an issue.

It gets right up my nose!!!! I find it takes me longer to read something in "txt spk" than something written using correct grammar. Don't even get me started on incorrect use of apostrophe's (pardon the deliberate mistake there!!))
