I recently got fired from my job. It has been an extremelly messy break up. The last straw right now is that they will not pay me for my overtime. I believe I am owed $1,400 in overtime. In all of this, I was never given any notice that I would be laid off, my employer is trying to combat my unemployment claim, it has become VERY public (front page story in our local newspaper), my ex boss cleaned out my office BEFORE I was fired and took my file containing my contract with the business along with any notes I had from review meetings. They will not pay me my overtime stating that I was an exempt employee. I had a meeting with my ex boss stating that i was non-exempt because I didn't oversee any employees. We agreed that my accrued overtime hours would count as vacation. Now they will not pay. They have slandered me in the newspaper and I have never been given a reason why I was fired. Do I have a case to sue them? Would anyone represent such a small case? (i live in colo.)

actually they can fire you for no reason at all. but if they do convince the unemployment office you were let go for legitimate reasons, you will not get unemployment.

You can sue the employer in small claims court. You don't need an attorney.
If an employee removed personal property from your desk, file theft charges against him or her.
If the former employees said anything bad about you that was not true, you can sue them for slander. You would need an attorney for that.

If you were a female, especially a black female, or better yet a black Muslim female, I'd say that when you finished, you could buy a nice island in the Bahamas. If you are a white male, time to move on.

Sometimes the truth is ugly.
