It depends greatly whether you live in a single family house or in an apartment building.
The commercial over the counter sprays or ant traps work fairly well but the trick is to attack the nest, which is not always an easy ting to do.
If you live in a single family house try this inexpensive trick. Buy a 5 lbs bag of sugar and a 4 or 5 lbs box of laundry soap called "BORAX" or anything with Boron in it. mix it 50-50 and spread it around the base of your house, several feet wide.
The sugar will attract the ants..they will carry it back to the nest and as they dine, they will also eat the Boron. Dead ants.
Good luck

My neighbor and I just had an ant problem (we live in the Inland Empire) she suggested using a mix of water and soap (not detergent) in a spray bottle since they were all over her house. I don't like poisons so I tried this and it worked. It knocks them out for a while, long enough to wipe them away, and it washes away their chemical trail so other ants don't follow. If that doesn't work, I sometimes use an enviro friendly ant spray called Enviroman's Bugs-R-Done which you can get at a health food store, but I have to order mine online.
As for preventing them, you could try a bunch of things:
Fill in all cracks in your walls, don't leave food or dirty dishes out, don't water next to your house (as it may flood them out their colony in search of dry ground), provide some shady areas away from your house (because they are trying to get out of the extreme heat), or you can try sprinkling some baby powder, borax, or ground up chalk on window sills, under doors, or around the perimeter of your house because the particles choke them so them won't cross it.
Good luck!

I have the same problem - in South Florida. Go outside the house and spray near all the spickets. I've found my ants seem to follow the pipes, and slip in thru the cracks around those points. May also want to put down some pesticide granules there too. Good luck.

1. put poison along the outside edges of your home. Also put poison on the inside along the areas that you see that ants. Usually along the walls. Don't put poison down inside if you have children or pets.
2. seal up all food items in the refrigerator or in plastic or tupperware. especially anything with sugar in it
3. if all else fails, hire an exterminator.
4. most insect problems can be controlled primarily through prevention, unless you have an infestation. you need to make sure you don't leave food sitting out

This truly works; put some banana peels in the oven on low heat until they are dry. Crush them up (I put them in a ziplock bag and beat them with a rolling pin). Mix that powder with equal parts brown sugar. The ants not only eat it, but bring it back to the nest, and this is toxic to them.
