Is 61% of all new HIV/AIDS cases are african american women between the ages of 24-44. I say yes. Now, this means that out of every 50 new people affected with the HIV virus, 30 of them are african american women. Also AIDs are the number one killer of african american women. (Heart disease for white women). My husbands cousin just past away from complication due to AIDS, she was 37. White men and women, and black men are living longer lives with the disease then african american women. Don't take my word, look it up!

Yes alarming but true. I'm a 27 year old black women, I'm married with three kids, but I still worry about my sisters, friends, and everyone struggling with this disease. AIDS is not color blind, everyone is getting affected blacks, whites, latinos.

Mr. Ken read I said 61% of ALL NEW CASES. This does not mean 61% of black women has aids, I explained that. Alot of the old cases are white men and women!

Mr. .02 the new cases in african american women as rising in the last couple of years. Will you people read, before you comment! This is about raising awareness, judging, or distorting facts, its about being informed. There is no color bias for diseases, especially AIDS, and whites and latinos are contracting this disease as well.

lets put things in perspective. There are 420,000 or so peole living with HIV. that comapres to roughly 299,580,000 people living without HIV.

aslo, there was significant decrease in the rate for black women between 2001 and 2005 so things are probably getting better not worse.

EDIT: I did read, your stats are from 2005.

There is a big pie chart at the bottom of the first article that says "race of WOMEN" 66% are Black. But of the all the diagnoses only 23% were women. So .... out of 50 new cases, 23 percent are women. Thats about or 11 or so. and of those 11 women 66 percent are black. Dude above is right, that is about 7 black women out of 50 new cases.

Of course this is based on the info you provide from 2005.

I appreciate you raising awareness. But please be accurate. Or if you are going to guestimate like I do. at least be close.

You are distorting your statistics:

Women accounted for 26% of the estimated 37,163 diagnoses for adults and adolescents [3].

Of the women infected, 61% were african-american. That means for every 50 people infected, 7 would we african-american women. A tragedy, nonetheless but lets not overstate the statistics.

EDIT: Ava, I am not saying that 61% of african-american women have AIDS either. I am saying that for ever 50 new cases, 7 will be African-American women not 30 as your analysis of the data states.

50 cases X .26 who will be women
13 women of the 50 new cases X .61 of the women will be african-american=
about 7 out of the 50 new cases would be african-american

If you trust those sources, then you have answered your own question. Aids affects our society and we need to support those working to find a cure.

Yup, they also have higher crime rates. It has to do with culture. Some cultures struggle with certain problems.
