If it's an 06, it has to still be under warranty. All new HD's have a 2 year warranty--even if you aren't the original owner.

Repeat: even if you aren't the original owner, any HD dealer will honor the warranty, and you pay nothing--it lasts for 2 years for the bike, regardless how many times ownership has been transferred those 2 years.

If an HD dealer tries to give you the run around and refuse, or charge anything, kindly inform them you'll never be seeing them again, and will take your business to another dealer. You'll tell your friends as well.

When that happens to me, it means the speedometer cable has become disconnected from the instrument cluster. Look for a cable that runs from the hub of your front tire up to the instrument cluster... but is flopping loose. Look for a place to screw it onto on the bottom of the instrument cluster.

This is general advice for a cable-type speedometer cable. If your instruments are electronic, then this may not apply -- you'll have a "pulse sensor" wire instead of a cable.

Probably the speedo cable. Easy to check, just unscrew from the back of the speedo and make sure the end is still on the cable. Replacing is very easy, just have to unscrew from both ends and put a new one on.

Probably just a loose cable. Ask at a gas station that services cars. They might take a look for nothing. Same goes for an auto parts store. Good luck!
