F1 cars use hydraulic fluid under pressure to operate the gearchange, clutch and throttle controls, sometimes seals or hoses fail and the system stops working, first the car stops changing gear then the throttle stops working and the car drones round at idle speed stuck in one gear, Famously Damon Hill had this happen when half a lap in the lead at the Hungaroring in 1997 in an Arrows! with half a lap to go. he chugged across the line in second place finally beaten only by Jaques Villeneuve in a Williams which overtook approaching the last corner.

Hydraulics is any part that is operated by pressurized hydraulic fluid - like the gear box, clutch, brakes...even the valves in the engine (springs and/or air pressure just can't handle the high RPM of the modern F1 engine.)

Usually I believe it is a loss of hydraulic pressure within the system either due to a broken pipe or something coming loose and the fluid spilling out or leaking

giles b'stard does have the correct answer, but half the time that they say its a hydraulic problem it usually means that the pit crew made bad fuel judgements and they ran out of fuel.

Sounds about like when a NASCAR car goes out of teh race, due to "handling." I've seen that more than once.

see the answer above me? disregard it, that is the right answer but its rarely true, rather than show a weekness in car or power plant desgine you say it was a bad hose or a cheap oil seal
