My neighbor just rented out one of her apts, but has the house up for sale secretly is that illegal? Don't the tenant have a right to know that the house is for sale and they would have to move soon?

The legality depends on the state laws. It's not necessarily detrimental to the tenant. She might be selling it as an investment property, which means the tenant would probably be encouraged to stay, not move out...

If the person is renting on a month to month basis, they can be evicted when the house sells if that's what the new owners want. If the current owners didn't tell the renter, that's a little shade - BUT if a house is "secretly" for sale, how many people do you think will know it's for sale and try to buy it? Not many, huh?
Besides, when the secret buyer comes to look at the place, the tennant will know it's for sale because they'll be in his apartment.
If the person has signed a lease, the new owner has to honor the lease and allow them to live there until the lease has expired.
If someone is going to buy a duplex, they probably WANT it to be rented out already because that means instant profit for them.

The buyer will be bound by the lease that the tenant has with the current owner. It may depend on the state whether the tenant has additional rights, such as the ability to match an outside offer.

BTW the owner is an idiot to try to sell the house secretly. They will get a much better price and a quicker sale if they list it on the MLS.

If the tenant has a lease, selling the property won't affect the tenant's rights at all.

You really can't put a place up for sale secretly. It's a bit obvious when a potential buyer comes around to inspect the property!

BB, of course, but if the tenant can't see the sign up in the yard, that's on her.
further, its not illegal to rent rooms or apts to others, but ethically, it should be on a MTM so the people know going in that its for 30days at a time.

the house can be sold and rented out. someone who is looking for a house to use as income would find one that is already rented out as an asset, they have income from day one!
