We're just trying to figure out the best place to have a good time. We're looking to drink some beer, watch sports, find some good company. Anything else that happens is just an added bonus.

The Gaslamp in Downtown San Diego is a more upscale, trendy, and older bar and club scene than Garnett Ave in Pacific Beach. Many of the bars have dress codes and covers and they are stricter about the dress codes and covers are higher compared to the few bars in PB that do the same. The bars are generally more expensive than PB and there are more of them downtown too. B/c of the dress codes and the fact the bars are more upscale, people dress a lot nicer in downtown compared to PB usually. There are still plenty of regular and dive bars w/o covers and dress codes to choose from.

Garnett Ave in PB is a more laid back, college/mid 20's type scene with cheaper bars and pretty much no dress codes and cheaper covers ($5 max), if they have one. The drinks are cheaper and the scene is very casual. The scene is just younger overall and not as trendy or pricey, but still very fun.

Downtown seems a little crazier than PB, i've seen a lot more fights and stuff go down in the Gaslamp than in PB.

Both places have good bars for beer and sports. In PB I would check out Tap Room , Moondoggies, Cass St, PB Bar and Grill. Downtown there are many bars to choose for that type of scene and I can't remember all their names but if you walk down 5th Ave and near there you will come across plenty of cool sports bars. Gaslamp Tavern and Whiskey Girl are pretty cool bars for some beers and sports. The following is a good website to check out what bars are in the Gaslamp and if you click on "The Sports Page" in the middle left of the page it will give you some good sports bars. http://www.gaslamp.org/

Another good one to check out is Altitude on the 23rd floor of the Marriot, it has a killer view of Petco and you can pretty much watch the game from there.

Okay, Garnet Ave has a younger crowd. College kids. Gas Lamp has some college kids, and some younger adults and professionals. Both can get crowded. Gas Lamp is downtown so it's all paid parking. But you can park in Old Town (for free) and take the trolley. Garnet is Pacific Beach. Fewer parking lots, mostly in the lots of banks and grocers after hours, and it's paid parking. It's hard to find street parking but it's free. If you like the beach though, go to PB. If you want a different crowd, go to the Gas Lamp. Also there are more options downtown. You can go to a nice restaurant or a pretentious club. A lot of places have a cover charge and dress code...and overpriced drinks. PB has a few clubs, cheaper drinks, no dress code (within reason).

At the Gas Lamp district public intoxication is acceptable, likely (but not officially) endorsed by the City of San Diego, the United States Navy and Marine Corps!

Gaslamp District is full of wannabe Irish Bars, Italian/Middle-Eastern Coffee Hauses.

Most Annoying Bars:
Dick's Last Resort, Moose McGillycuttys and Johnny Love's.

Most TOTALLY OBNOXIOUS PLACE:
Dick's Last Resort

Best:
The Bitter End (they have a strict dress code), CheeChee's,
The Star Bar, Cafe Seville, Cafe Bassam's, Cafe Lulu,

GO TO HILLCREST!!
Go to the Brass Rail, Kicker's, Rich's, #1 on 5th, Nunu's, Flick's, Numbers and the Flame all are awesome!

Best Liquar store is Palomar Liquar in Old Town.

Best 7-11 is at 4th and Robinson in Hillcrest.

Garnet Ave... is in the Pacific Beach area.... where the Gas Lamp district is in down town....

In downtown there is a ship called the Star Of India... and you can go on it... below the deck is it like a museum....

There is also places like the U.S. Midway that is an aircraft carrier and alot of fun to go on.

Good Luck.... and it's been pretty hot here .... but that is what the locals think... it usually doesn't get that hot here...

Garnet Ave is Pacific Beach area, north of Sea World. Gaslamp is downtown San Diego. Gaslamp has more within walking distance and has the benefit of having the Trolley to get to other areas.

Anti patriotic is pulling your leg about his bar suggestions. The ones in Hillcrest he lists are all gay bars. If you're gay they're good bars but if you're straight it will not work out as well as you'd like.

Funny he says that Gaslamp is more accepting of drunk people when my experience is that Garnet has more obviously drunk obnoxious people. Garnet (PB) definitely has a younger crowd who are perhaps not experienced drinkers and therefore don't know how to moderate their drinking to stay pleasantly drunk versus "vomit and pass out" drunk.

Either place you mention is just fine; I'd support Gaslamp only for the reason that you can transport by trolly and avoid the driving/parking problems that drinking areas seem to have. Gaslamp is more dressy, which is either good or bad depending on your mood.
