OK, here's an example:

HG55 ABC

HG = the area where the car was registered. In this example, HG means it was registered in the Hampshire/Dorset region.

55 = the year the vehicle was registered. In this example, September 2005.
51 = September 2001
02 = March 2002
52 = September 2002
03 = March 2003
53 = September 2003
04 = March 2004
54 = September 2004
05 = March 2005
06 = March 2006
56 = September 2006
07 = March 2007
57 = September 2007

ABC = a randomly generated series of letters.

Hello

The new vehicle registration format is possibly the most confusing thing... ever!!

I will do my best to explain for you. Here goes,

Your vehicles Reg Plate has 7 characters in 3 parts. Each part has a different meaning.

Here's an example Plate AB51 DVL

The first 2 represent the "Local Memory Tag"

The first character, for example (A) refers to a region, the second (B) refers to the local DVLA office.

This plate shows the car was first registered in Anglia at the Peterborough DVLA office.

The numbers after AB are the "Age identifiers", these will continue to change twice per year in March and September.

In the example above "51" represents the 6 month period from September 2001 to February 2002. As of March 02 new vehicles will registered as xx02 DVL.

The last three letters will provide a random element to make each registration mark unique.

Hope this makes sense. It took me a while to understand it too.

Take Care x

The first two letters represent where the car was registered and the following two numbers show when the car was registered (e.g BK03 XYZ would have been registered in Birmingham in March 2003).
If the first two letters were followed by 53 instead, for example, then the car would have been registered in September 2003, which is the other time of year for the registration of new cars.
However, I don't know what the final 3 letters represent, they could just be random.

Check out the link below, it might explain it better than me!

The first two digits indicate the authority which first registered the vehicle: i.e. WA = West Country, GA = Kent (Garden of England), etc.
The second two digits indicate the period during which the vehicle was registered: 01 indicates the period March to Septmember 2001, 51 indicates September 2001 to March 2002, 02 indicates March to September 2002, 52 indicates September 2002 to March 2003, and so on. The last three digits are the individual vehicle's unique identifier.
Thus, for example, BL03 HRG would be a vehicle registered by the Birmingham authority between March and September 2003.

Mine is ML54CVK. The 54 means the fifth month and the 4 refers to 2004, the year that the car was brand new.
