I'm getting old and I don't understand. I would like to hear what "emo" music sounds like. Any suggestions?

HappyDamn is way off. Here's some of the bands I immediately think of when I hear emo. Typically emo bands have almost all the same theme-sappy love type songs. Another tell-tale sign of an emo band are concerts with an 80% female crowd signing along with every song.

1. Dashboard Confessional (quintessential emo band)
2. Thursday
3. Saves the Day
4. The Get Up Kids (admittedly I actually am a long time fan-they're from Lawrence where I lived while in college, so a little biased)
5. Something Corporate
6. Hawthorne Heights
7. Sense Field
8. The Starting Line
9. The Movielife
10. The New Amsterdams (a by-product of the Get Up Kids)

Now I've seen some postings for this questions not making an important distinction. There is also what is considered screamo; which is music with the same theme as emo (my girlfriend broke up with me and my life is over), but with a harder more agressive sound; a veritable sheep in wolves clothing. Here are a few screamo bands.

1. My Chemical Romance
2. Taking Back Sunday
3. From Autumn to Ashes
4. Universal Order of Armageddon
5. Rites of Spring

Dani G, Lovnrckts, and HappyCat have the best answers on this one.

It IS confusing because "emo" meant a different sound in the 80s (see Dani G) than it typically does now (more of a pop influence...see Lovnrckts and HappyCat).

Also, bear in mind that most bands that are emo think it's "uncool" to be CALLED that....so there are continual fights over what is and is NOT "emo". The other thing clouding the waters is that a lot of the first wave emo fans HATE the 2nd wave and don't want ANYONE to call it "emo"...much as heavy metal fans fight over who is and isn't "hair" metal...and whether hair metal even IS metal. :P

Wish I could make this less confusing but I read a whole book on this and it doesn't get a whole lot clearer than this...

The only emo (emocore) bands I listen to are from the first wave....mid 80s-early 90s:

Rites of Spring
Embrace
One Last Wish
Beefeater
Gray Matter
Fire Party
Moss Icon
Shudder To Think

hahahahaha.....jay you're a riot

Emo moosik sucks. Just turn the radio on to whatever alternative station you have where you live (97 X...it sucks), and listen to all the horribleness that comes with it. Emo bands are the guys who wear the tight girly pants (I call them 'little sisters' pants' bands), and go heavy with the eyeliner. Also notice that they are the most popular bands out there. Stay true to the GOOD music, like older Marilyn Manson, Snog, Pink Floyd, The Doors, The Ramones, Rammstein, Nirvana, and lets not forget the entire world of techno such as God Module.

Don't feel bad, none of us are getting any younger. Be prepared to be very confused as to what this term even means anymore as it is constantly shifting more than the San Andreas Fault. The term as it stand today means the following bands, which sound like happy pop-punk but have dark lyrical content. They also tend to have the dumbest names in all of rock. Once you hear it, run for the hills.

My Chemical Romance
Fall Out Boy
Panic! at the Disco
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Alkaline Trio
The Used
Taking Back Sunday
I am Ghost
Say Anything
Saves the Day
Brand New
Cute Is What We Aim For - (maybe the most annoying name yet)

Sometimes you can turn up the guitars and yell a bit and like magic it turns into screamo.

Silverstein
Hawthorne Heights
Thrice

I would say that emo bands are:
Fall out boy (omg they rock - sorry big fan here!)
My Chemical Romance (omg they rock too - sorry i'm also a big fan of MCR)
The view (A british indie/emo band)
Bowling for soup (ehh.. they're okay)
Some people would consider green day a emo band some people disagree.
(I feel kind of emo right now...)
