Cockroaches are generally omnivores. An exception to this is the wood-eating Cryptocercus species found in Russia, China, Korea and the United States. Although they are incapable of digesting the cellulose themselves, they have a symbiotic relationship with a protozoan that digests the cellulose, allowing them to extract the nutrients. In this, they are similar to termites and current research suggests that the genus Cryptocercus is more closely related to termites than it is to other cockroaches. Cockroaches are most common in tropical and subtropical climates. Some species are in close association with human dwellings and widely found around garbage or in the kitchen
Roaches are all about eatting unwanted materials and recycling it into a usable source of energy for the planet.

Their roll or reason is to survive.
They out lived the dinosaurs and they will certainly out live us.
They,as all other creatures with out language, and the ability to be objective will simply run the course of their virtually unknowing lives while we fill the roll of being the awareness of the universe.

They let you know it's time to contact your dealer.
I kid, I kid.
Their role is scavenger, as it's always been. Eater of scraps, food for small predators. They're also one of the few scavengers that the prosperous, yet extremely tight, niche created by human habitation.

They clean up around bachelor pads and frat houses? :)
Technically they're biological waste disposers.. dead animals, plants, etc., they recycle it back into the soils.
And of course other animals eat them.
