Does is have to be American history? I'd go with the assassination of Russia's Tsar Nikolas II and his family in 1918. It's a timely topic, since it was just in the past week or so that they discovered what they believe are the remains of Nikolas' son Alexei and daughter Maria (or Anastasia, they're not entirely sure which). The mystery of what happened to the two children has lasted for nearly 100 years, with several people claiming to be one of the Grand Duchesses who miraculously escaped, the most famous being Anna Anderson/"Anastasia."

I think either the Role of African-Americans in the Civil War or The History of the "Black Hand" that lead to the beginning of the first world war are both interesting topics that most people do not really go after in this kind of thing.
