I downloaded some nice presentations backrounds from MS.com, but when I open it, I can't use another backround on another slide in the same presentation. How do I get it to let me use different backrounds for different slides in the same presentation?

Since there is now several different versions of PowerPoint, and each behaves differently in this regard, I recommend that you search PowerPoint help for this topic:
Apply the master template to a slide
If that topic isn't available then search PowerPoint's for help on Multiple Masters.

the easiest way would be to save individual slides, then open up a "new presentation" use individual slide backgrounds and then incorporate others,..
you essentially downloaded background themes, so it's difficult to break those down
