A seventeen year old student of mine has come up to me with a problem. She had sex with someone a month ago for the first time, and her parents don't know. They want to take her to the doctor to see if she is still a virgin (this is in Greece by the way). Can a doctor actually tell that she is or isn't? Since she is underage, I don't know if the doctor patient priviledge applies.

Yes, I confess...I'm the student...LOL I wish I could be seventeen again and in trouble. However, my student did not trust me when I told her that the doctor cannot tell 100% if she is or isn't. I had to show her y'alls responses for her to relax a little. Thank you all for answering.

No, No, take it granted from me, it is not possible for a Gynecologist or any doctor whether the girl is a virgin.

I'm not sure about Greece, but in America, that is extremely illegal. Unless she's been raped or hurt, her sexual health is her private knowledge and her parents have no right to make her do that.
To answer the question though, it really depends. The thing that some people think makes a virgin a virgin is the hymen, a thin piece of skin partially covering the vaginal opening. If this skin has not been previously broken, it will theoretically tear during first sexual intercourse. However, many girls actually tear this skin WAY before they have sexual intercourse by bike riding, horse back riding, using tampons, etc. And if that is the case, there would be no "physical evidence" that she is no longer a virgin.

Unfortunately, Greece is a country that values virginity in females.
The parents can take her to the doctor and he can perform a pelvic exam upon her, being able to tell if her hymen is broken. But, whether the hymen was broken through sexual intercourse cannot be determined. Your student's hymen could have already been broken when she rode a bike or if she rode a horse. He would not be able to tell the parents 'yes, she had sex' because he would be breaking a code of ethics, he knows there are other contributing factors to a hymen being broken.

No a doc cannot tell if a woman is a virgin or not. Hymen's can be torn with sports or other things so that is not a sign that she is a virgin. There is absolutely no way a doc can tell if she is a virgin or not and I am surprised a doc would even let this kind of an appointment be made as this is a huge waste of money and the docs time.

I'm 15 years old. I've learned many facts about intercourse and so forth. Due to the fact, there are mostly no possible way to find if a person is a virgin.
There was one way, however it was considered false. Due to the female's hymen(I think that's what its called) it can break anytime. In medieval times, they used to look to see if a female princess or so forth had intercourse. If the hymen was broken, she was considered dirty. However, it is proved false since the female's hymen can break that while doing random activities at a certain age.

You're not a teacher - you're probably the "student" you're talking about - any adult would know the answer to this question already.
YES, it'll be VERY obvious to the doctor that she's not a virgin. It would be difficult to tell if she still was one though - sometimes the hymen can tear through exercise, etc.
If she's had sex recently enough before her visit, the doctor will be able to see abraisions inside her even.
In Greece who knows if the doc is legally able to tell her parents. He wouldn't be able to in the US though.
Just ask your doctor not to tell your parents, he should respect your wishes.

Yes, The Hymen is a piece of skin that is there before sex and is broken after intercourse. BUT, the hymen can break easily. My mother told me that when she was younger she fell of the counter and straddled a cup board door that was left open. Her mother took her to the Dr and that is when her hymen was broke. This is also typical in horse back riders. The dr may explain this to the parents.

depends on whether the hymen was intact before sex or not...if it was broken earlier and has healed over years ago...it would be a 50/50 call...or doctors best guess...usually the girl will give her self away through her actions in the exam...nervous atitude...deliberate lies the doctor can see through..etc. best would be for her to get a promice of confidentiallity from the doctor for answering his questions truthfully..

What kind of parents does this girl have? I hate people like that and thank God I didn't have parents like that. Do they want to inspect her underware after a day at school, too? And, yes, a GYN can tell if you are a virgin.

My parents did the same thing with me, we got inside the doctors room and he laughed at them. No, they can not tell. If the hymen is broken most people believe it's because of sex, yet, excersicing, menstraul cycle and just growing can tear the hymen, so knowone will actually know if she had sex or not.
