I can definitely state that etymology is the study of the history of words - when they entered a language, from what source, and how their form and meaning have changed over time.

Etymology comes from the Greek étymon (true meaning, from 'etymos' true) and lógos (word), and originally applied to the search of supposedly "original" or "true" meanings of words, on principles that are rejected as unscientific by modern linguistics

The etymology of a word refers to its origin and historical roots because etymology is the study of the origins and history of linguistic form.

The word etymology is derived from the Greek etumos which means real or true. The ending ology suggests the study/science of something, as in biology or geology. And that is the etymology of etymology. It is the study of the origins of words; how they evolved
