Touche, WiseOne - "Retardation" is a CLINICAL diagnosis. Sure, calling someone a retard just to be mean or rude is not cool. However, one who actually HAS the disability IS a retard, regardless of the unfortunate negative stigma that goes along with it. We can be politically correct all we want, however, the DSM even uses the word 'retarded'... go cry to them.
edit: excuse me; I should restate this in a way that 'lavender' understands better. Calling people who ARE retarded a "retard" is likely unoffensive in nature. Calling other people who are not retarded a "retard," as I said before, may be offensive to those who are retarded, but not necessarily to the person being called a retard. Understand what I was saying? However, for you to use a question's section to comment on the use of the word... everyone has to deal with their affiliated group being called descriminatory names - people who are gay hear others use the word "f*g," black people hear the n word used, jews hear all sorts of offensive slurs... the list goes on and on. We all deal with it - most of us do so in SILENCE.

Words and it's accompanying feeling offer that meaning.
If I call someone a retard, then it's a joke and maybe they are perfectly fine. Maybe they did something stupid or below average intelligence.
I wouldn't go up to a mentally disabled person and call them a ******* retard.
Stop being so sensitive and use the logic side of your brain processing, less on the "feeling" side.

Sometimes when people say things they don't know what the current politically correct slang is. Ten years ago people with disabilities were called retarded. Some older people still use this term. Try not to be so sensitive -in most cases there is no harm intended.
If you are referring to those who use the term to hurt, well just consider the source -obviously they are socially retarded :)

I understand your dilemma. This is how I look at it. There are the mentally retarded and that is extremely unfortunate, and then there are those that were born normal but chose to be a retard later. I encounter these every day. people that start trouble, whom are racist, just plain dumb, hateful and mean for everything and so on and so on.

To me there is a difference between retard, and special needs..
Your post is retarded in my opinion because you brought up religion in a post that has nothing to do with mentally disabled. So you are hindered from your own good judgment. .
A person with a mental disability would be special needs.

Retarded is not a bad word, it is merely descriptive. Calling someone "mentally challenged" or "cognatively disabled" is the same as calling them "mentally retarded". It is usually used as "mentally retarded", but slang has reduced it to a derogitory shortened "retard".
Use more punctuation. It is difficult to understand where one thought ends and another begins in your post.

Well, isn't calling out one religion on the same level as calling someone out with a disability? Both are a generalization, yes?

I don't like when that term is used. Although some that use the word are only misinformed on the ways and words of those with disabilities.
