flying ants?

has anyone seen those ant like bugs that fly around? what are they called and do they bite/sting?

We have seen them coming out of the ground in our yard! At this time of year some ants develop wings and leave their home to start a nest somewhere else, then they lose their wings.

I have seen those for the first time the other day, I didn't know there was any such thing as flying ants.

They sound like termites, the only flying ants I know about.
