The over the counter pills are safe, that's why they're OTC. Take them 30 to 15 minutes before bedtime, dim the lights, turn off all noise, turn on a fan for background lull, and start a dull book. Works every time.

First don't start taking meds to help-I tried that then could NEVER go to sleep without them (benadryl). I started a healthier lifestyle with less stress and it helped. I eat better, workout more, less caffeine, etc, etc. I also found chamomile tea (not out of the box) from the health food co-op type store really helped. Good luck.

Exercise daily during the day, have your body on a regulated schedule (going to bed the same time every night) and start out with taking melatonin at night to regulate your body's biorhythms.

The best cure is to see your doc for a sleep study to find out what is causing your insomnia so you can figure out how to treat it. Go see your doc and get a sleep study done.

I had this problem at one time, and I found doing a workout in the evening before bed did the trick.

breathe in and out
6 seconds in
hold for 4 seconds
6 seconds out
hold for one second
repeat.

this'll help you concentrate on your breathing rather than all the things that may have been on ur mind and making you anxious / stressed out.
