i recently got a prescription from my gyno for gardasil, but my mom doesn't think it's too safe. I've heard more pro's than cons, about it, but i'm still not sure if it's totally safe. Also, i've heard that gyno's prescribe it and tell you to go to your doctor to get it injected (as mine did) because they don't want to administer it for insurance reasons... is this true?

Please research this drug.

It is fairly new, it does not protect against ALL cervical cancers, and noone really knows the long term affects with regards to periods, pregnancy, etc.

I would wait a few more years before getting this.

Your mom has a very very valid reason to be concerned for you.

Since Gardasil is still relatively new, some insurance companies may not cover it. When a doc gives a shot uncovered by insurance, he or she doesn't get reimbursed. That may sound crass, but some immunizations are very expensive.

By giving you a prescription for the Gardasil, the responsibility for payment is on you, not the doctor. As far as going to your family physician or pediatrician for the shot, my bias is that immunization records are best kept by ones personal physician, not a gyn or other specialist.

Ask the pharmacist for the product safety information. Gardasil is safe. Infection with human papilloma virus is not safe. You risk cervical cancer in later years.

I had my last shot in April (it takes 3 spread months apart). I went to my gyno's office for all of them. . I haven't heard about getting a prescription for it and then going somewhere else to get the shot?. .
I think it's perfectly safe. .they do make you stay for like 15 minutes afterward to make sure there's no allergic reaction to the shot. I remember it hurts some during the actual injection then there's a little soreness-I guess like with any other.
EDIT It's definitely expensive-but worth it! I ended up paying over $300 for all of it.

Get the shots... For some reason some mom's are having mom issues with it that have a lot more to do with this crazy notion that if their daughters get the shot they will think it is a liscense to have sex... Obviously t is not. But it will help to protect you against the leading cause of cervical cancer in women and the most common STD in young women HPV. You still need to use condoms and birth control if you do have sex ( But you can get HPV with a condom so this shot is a miracle for young women and not available to old women ( past 26 ) like me ). The idea is to get the shots before being sexually active

Im not sure if thats true.....but I got gardisil when I last had my physical. I recently had my second dose. I go back in October to get my last dose. I have heard all the side effects of having the shots. I didnt have any reactions to the shots. Side effects vary with different people, people react to things differently but for me I was fine.
