Fablehaven by Brandon Mull... a story about a brother and sister who find out some amazing things about their grandparents 'farm'
Eragon by Christopher Paolini... a story about a boy who finds a dragon egg
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer... a story about a girl who falls in love with a vampire
His Dark Materials Trilogy. Absolutely amazing tale. The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass are the 3 books.
Artemis Fowl is good, but kind of young in my eyes. It doesn't have a sort of metaphor to the whole tale.
The Amulet of Samarkand... a story about a boy who finds out he's a magician.. kind of like HP but definitely its own story.

I am a "Thriller" book fanatic and have read a huge percentage thats out there, so here are some excellent choices (I was going to say "page turner" until I heard the joke "why do people say this book is a real page turner--I know how books work!) Jeffery Deaver, Dennis Lehane, David Morrell and Lee Child, in my opinion they are the best thriller writers in the business!! I am a avid reader in this genre and have read Coben, King, Koontz, F. Paul Wilson, Connelly, and many others but none can touch these authors I've listed! The Deaver book I've just finished reading now is "The Sleeping Doll"--a brand new release and has literally keeped me up at nights!! I'm quite sure you'll love his other thrillers as well, such as "The Bone Collector", "A Maiden's Grave", "The Coffin Dancer", "Praying For Rain", "Cold Moon", "The Twelveth Card", "The Vanished Man", "Devil's Tear Drop" et el. For Lehane, start with "A Drink Before War" (don't let the title fool you) then "Darkness Take My Hand", "Sacred", "Gone, Baby Gone", "Prayers For Rain", "Shutter Island" and "Mystic River." For Lee Child, you can start with his first and move forward, but it's Ok if you don't. Some personal favs are: "One Shot", "Trip Wire", "Hard Luck and Trouble"--a new release, "The Persuader"-my personal fav, "The Hard Way", but they are all page turners! Also, last but definately not least is David Morrell. All his books are good, but I especially enjoy his last two releases "Creepers" and "Scavenger" which are guaranteed page-turners. Just finished my first Ed Mcbain book "Fiddlers" and it was both engaging and hilarious! Hope this helps, enjoy, Greg

Try the "His Dark Materials" series. The first one is "The Golden Compass." I think they are making a movie of it, with Nicole Kidman. It is very similar to the Potter books except the main character is a girl, and the overall "tone" of the books is a little darker, I think. Still, they are very good. Maybe a little more difficult to get into or slower to start than Potter, too, but if you can make it through the first third of the first one, it really picks up from there.

Hope this helps.

I love Harry Potter but don't read any books similar to it though. I would suggest the lord of the rings, and Lemony snicket's "a series of unfortunate events" as i have read the first book and it is quite entertaining. there are numerous books in the series to keep you entertained for a while! :)

Greetings! There are lots of very good series in the "kids" category. The "Artemus Fowl" series by Eoin Colfer comes to mind, also there is "The Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket, "His Dark Materials" by Phillip Pullman, and "The Chronicles of Narnia" by CS Lewis. All of these books are very entertaining in their own right.

Hope this helps. Take care.

I would say the chronicles of Narnia, if you have not already read it. If you have or are not that kind of person then I suggest the Eragon or Artemis fowl series.
