A friend has over 50,000 points and is level 7 so I've spent a lot of time analyzing this.
Its a form of graffiti if you think about it. Serves the same function as the forums of Rome and the soapboxes of early America.
It allows people to spill their guts, so to speak
On the more specialized boards, it actually is useful for tough questions
