I have a Compaq laptop and a Dell laptop that I leave running for weeks on end with no bad side effects. However, I take the batteries out if they are not being charged. There is some evidence that taking out the battery while running on external power will extend the life of laptop batteries.
One thing to keep in mind, you do not want to put a continuous heavy load on a laptop (like running BOINC/World Community Grid) for a long time. Laptops really aren't made for a heavy load since there is very little room to dissipate heat and chargers generally aren't very heavy duty. What you are doing shouldn't tax your laptop much at all.

Most laptop batteries last about 4 or 5 hours, so plug it in.

Mine does all the time for work. I agree with the other poster though about letting the bottom have adequate ventilation. Don't leave it on a bed or rug running.

It will run for as many hours as it has power. The battery may not last that long, but if you plug it in, you'll be fine.

your laptop should be fine as long as you don't cover up the heat vents. My laptop's been on for 6 days without any problems...

As long as it doesn't overheat, it'll be fine with AC power.
