If you are one of those people who have trouble getting to sleep because your mind races at night with thoughts of the day, music can help because it gives you something soothing to focus on. Myself, I use music to go to sleep to because the noises the house makes at night (creaking, settling, dog walking around, etc.) will keep me from drifting off.

I'm an insomniac, so anything that would give me more than 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep would be welcome!
Presumably, low volume, pleasant, music or other sounds, would lead to a full and restful sleep, including pleasant dreams.
However, if the music is loud or otherwise unpleasant (whether it's classical music or rap or any other form), it may cause damage to your eardrums while you sleep (I've seen people sleep through decibel levels that would drown out a jackhammer!), not to mention the nightmares you'd probably have (it's your brain screaming for you to wake up and lower da muzak, yo!). ;)
The bottom link has a list (click on #2 on that page) of sleep-inducing CD's. Unfortunately, it doesn't say whether that's because the music is soothing or boring! ;)

It lulls you to sleep - I am a fan of listening to the tv to fall asleep myself. If I wake up at night and can't fall back asleep, I turn my iPod on though and that always helps.

When you listen to music that lulls you to sleep, your subconscious mind will tend to remember the song well, and I'm pretty sure it will improve your memory of that song.

There actually is no real benefit as the music may help you nod off but will most likely inhibit your ability to reach REM which is where you get the most rest.

Don't know, but unless I'm dead on my feet, I can't sleep with the radio on. I used to though. These days quiet is more soothing to me. Interesting!

Depends on what type of music... you could be relazing and dream about the music... you could be more relaxed in the morning etc...
