They are just two different names to make it easier for people to sling mud at each other. Those words exist to divide people.
Drop your political affiliation and become an individual.

It wasn't too long ago that people like Reagan could sit down across a table with a Tip O'Niell or a Ted Kennedy and get the country's business done, in spite of the ideological divide. Sometimes Reagan won. Sometimes the democrats in congress won but the American public business was taken care of.
We seems to have lost that perspective in the last 20 years as we've allowed the partisans to run the show. Since the 90s we have allowed the political discourse to become one big shouting match and the fight's spilled down to the voters as well.
This is why when I first started posting here I would call some of the people here bomb throwers because it seemed that the only reason for some people here was to incite their rivals on the other side. Nothing gets done when everybody is shouting at each other.

I thought that same thing. when you consider the candidates and current office holders, it doesnt leave much room for political debate, due to the one-sidedness, of the situation. its pretty much big corporations get it all, give some to the government for their personal pleasures and take as much as humanly possible from the working class. I think the finger pointing is out of frustration. the people just entering the workforce think this is the way its always been and no one is doing anything to make it right. I guess its modern day civil unrest. the ones that arent pointing fingers are even worse since they just accept it as fact. while it isnt really a democratic/republican issue its more of a government that is supposed to be "for the people" gone haywire, the finger pointers show a since of knowing something is wrong.

When Bill Clinton was President, he was still able to get things done despite having to work with a Republican controlled Congress for virtually his entire administration. Sure he was relentlessly pursued. by the Republican's for several different scandals, but he was still able to take care of the nation's business.
Part of the reason people are so polarized now is because George Bush has made it that way. He is an extremely conservative President who has basically spent his entire administration ramming is policies and beliefs down the throats of Americans. And because he had a Republican controlled Congress for the first 6 years, he was basically able to do whatever he wanted.
Until we have leadership that is respectful of all points of view - regardless of party - we are going to see the political climate of our country remain polarized into liberals and conservatives.

Over on the R&S page this would be a drink question.
But I'll answer. As long as we've been separated from God, we've all been playing the game of trying to be smarter than the other person in order to gain their favor, or the attention/love/respect of somebody else or some other group.
The republican/democrat, theist/atheist debate is about the same thing...seeking praise from people around us which will ultimately be empty.
Like with religion, figure out where you stand on the issues, and participate.

There was a caining of a Senator in Congress that permanently maimed him before 1861, Jefferson used to be called an atheist and rumored to have a slave child in 1800, Lincold was portrayed as an ape in 1859, and so on. Nothing new, just, as old as the stars, I suppose...

People like to use their index finger when talking mumbo jumbo and putting the blame on each other.

I am hoping that the extreme cons and libs are really just a small segment of the population who care more about being right and demeaning their "opponent" then the state of our country.

You can thank Karl Rove and Mr. Bush for the division among the factions. Can't we all get along? It is my hope and prayer for the future of this country. United we stand, divided we fall.
