Reports from surrounding the CBS show "Kid Nation" state that each child was paid $5,000 for 40 days work. According to the article if these reality show participants were to be classified as actors the $5,000 for 40 days work would be insufficient as even the lowest scales of union pay. So, how much would an actor make for 40 days work according to the lowest union pay scales?

Oh my gosh, there are sooooo many factors that go into negotiating contracts, especially when you're looking at a 40-day period. According to the contract info on the SAG website, the lowest amount for a day performer is a daily rate of $759 or a weekly rate of $2634. So, yes, in a nutshell, the $5000 those kids are getting paid is less than the typical union amounts, however it's impossible to put a set number on how much the "typical" actor would get. Hopefully they have a good agent who will negotiate them a higher rate!
Check out the contracts section on sag.org for rate breakdowns.

It's entirely dependent on the contract they get. Stars can do all kinds of negotiation, and can make millions of dollars for a movie. But most actors just make union scale, which is very low. I think right now it's $50 for a non-speaking role or $150 for a speaking role. They only even pay that much because the union tells them that they have to. There are so many people who want to break into the industry that they would work for free. In short: The acting industry only pays well if you are one of the top-top stars. Everyone else has to also wait tables or something. Only go into acting if you love acting, and want to do it no matter what. If you have to ask what the money will be like, you probably don't have the commitment needed to make it.

It is difficult to discuss pay scales in a short answer. Wages are determined by so many things. Non-union stage can pay as little as $110 / week (and yes, when you divide that by the number of hours, it is not much). They can also pay much more or not at all. Union shows have set minimums determined by the size of the houes, the kind of production, the cost of the ticket, etc. These pays range from $400 - 800 again, per week. Broadway houses minimum is $1466/week although stars are making much more. Directors, choreoraphers, musical directors are paid a set amount per project $1500-$3000 per show. Movie extras can make $50-80 /day.

They don't. Actors get paid per project, not per hour. This makes it tricky because the amount could be just about anything. It really depends on the job. This is why actors will take on a number of jobs at once, tv shows, commercials, etc, just to make enough money. It's a tough living.
