OK, pretty much every state requires state-specific, but is just a broad understanding ok or do you have to know nit-picky details as in say...NC?

Bar exams test you on your knowledge of Common Law, not state specific laws/statutes. Knowing specific statutes and/or case law in the state your are taking the exam in will help but it is generally not required.

Since you would be applying for a license in NJ, it would make sense to know the particular laws there.
