I am looking for different customs from varied backgrounds. Our class is studying international customs.?

I attend the University of Akron and our class is studying international customs. Any unique customs would be appreciated. :-) All cultures welcome.

In Thailand it is custom not to show the sole of your feet.if you are sunbathing with the souls of your feet facing someones face it is very rude,also if you touch a Thai persons head it is rude.They also have a dowry in force too.If you marry a thai lady you are supposed to give the family money but usually if the family's wealthy they give the money back!
In Thailand too if you start a new business or bar etc it is custom to get 9 monks who come and bless the place first to give it luck.if the bar is dirty or not finished before they come this is rude too.

In India and Sri Lanka, people wash themselves after going to the toilet and not toilet paper. In both places also almost no one says Thank you, Excuse me, or You're welcome. Instead you use facial expression to convey these things.

Something far more serious is that in large parts of the Muslim world but also in parts of NW India it is quite customary to kill a girl or woman if she has sex with or marries someone her parents do not approve of.

Zillions of customs. Why not be creative though and list the American customs that are unusual by world standards?

You could research the "Rain queen" the lembombo people
Female leader with wives , her name mojadji. At the moment they are queen less. Long and interesting story you get plenty hits when you search rain queen mojadji.
I might have spelled wrong the tribe & her name. Rain queen is enough ,google will show you sites. Ad South Africa to the search the previous Queen was a friend of Nelson Mandela

In Germany it is customary not to open a gift in front of the giver. So, you should never take flowers if you are invited over to dinner - they will sit in the bouquet wrap and won't be put into water until after you have left.

in india, in the rural areas, the system of dowry is followed.. and most people follow the system of arranged marriage.
also, hindus are not buried, they are burnt, on a pyre and theyre ashes are dumped in the river ganga.
also, this custom, it was made illegal, but sometimes it is carried out secretly...near rajasthan and stuff, when a man dies, his wife is expected to jump into the burning pyre and kill herself..

theres also another custom.. when indians meet someone elder to them(granmom, mom) they perform something called PRANAM> where they touch the elders feet and cross their hearts.. it shows respect/...........
