Do all pufferfish stay on the surface, do they have the ability to swim to the bottom? I have seen them at stores and i don't think i've seen any swimming around the middle or bottom of the tank.

Also are they puffed up like that all the time or can they release the air and make themselves smaller? I thought that puffing up was just a defense mechanism...

Yes they can swim at all levels of an aquarium. They do not puff up unless they are attacked or feel frightened by another species.

They swim in all levels of a tank

They only puff up if they're in stress or frightened

or if you would take them out of the water, which is fatal for them

Hope that helps
Good luck
