You will need a wireless network card. Once the card isproperly installed in your PC it will see the network. You may need to input a code number (usually found on the router) to enable it, but it's all very simple and straight forward. If you want, they also sell network adapters that plug into a USB port. These work well, and are even simpler to get you going.

Yes, you can plug the network cable directly into the router, but that somewhat defeats the purpse of the wireless part.
In order to use the wireless portion, you must have a wireless network card (or capability) in your laptop. Many newer laptops already have that capability built-in. For others, you'll need to get either a PC Card-type or USB-type network card (Still others, you can get an internal card and have it installed.)
Once installed, follow the directions to locate and connect to the wireless router.

To connecto to wireless router, yes, you will need a wireless network card, or a USB Wireless adapter.. this gives you mobility to move around so long as you are in range.
RJ45 works as well. Just that you are restricted by the wire and must be connected to the router at all times.

You need a wireless NIC, and it'll only connect automatically if you don't have wireless security setup on your router.

Usb wireless adapters are the easiest, just plug it into your usb port. It should also work if you plug it in by cable.
