domain = - ∞ to + ∞

range = -4 to + ∞

Domain is (-inf,-2] U [2,inf); range is [0,inf). Numbers x such that -2 < x < 2 will put a negative number under the radical, and I doubt that a student in complex analysis would be in doubt about range and domain.
