I have been on birth control pills for almost 5 years now. After years of bloating, moodiness, headaches, nights sweats, etc. I am really thinking about getting off them. I will use a different form of birth control, no more pills or even injections. Is it bad to be on them so long or even longer? I feel like the past year has been the worst with bloating and moodiness. Does this increase after long use of the pill? Can long use of BCP's cause future health problems?

No, but it could mean you need to switch brands. I have been on the Pill for over 6 years now, and I have noticed that I will like a particular brand of Pill for about 1 or 2 years, then suddenly begin experiencing side effects I don't like. At that time, I will go to my doctor and tell her what's going on and she'll prescribe a different type of Pill, perhaps a low-estrogen one or one that is monophasic (only one color of pill the whole month) instead of triphasic (three different colors of pills per month, each with a different dose of hormones). That always seems to help those side effects go away...until the next time it's time to change. I started out with Ortho Tri-Cyclen, and I liked it, but about 6 months in, I started noticing that I was spotting every day between weeks 2 and 3, so I switched to a generic form of Ortho-Novum. Thatone worked well for about a year, until my upper lip started getting really dark and it looked like a mustache frm a distance, so then I switched again to some other one, which made me sort of fatter than usual and lowered my sex drive after about another 2 years or so, and I recently (about a year ago) switched to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, which I still really like so far. The only side effect I've seen is bigger boobs, but that's a side effect I want!!!

They may cause problems as you use them when you are older, women up to 35 yeas old and smokers are in great risk of trombosis and vascular diseases due to hormones. In the 60´s when contraception became very popular, bc pills had a very strong dosage of hormones, then they discovered, such level of hormones wasn´t needed for contraception; so they made low dose pills.

Nowadays, you don´t have to take a rest of the pill , due to it´s low dose of hormones, but they are hormones and they can cause vascular problems. I suggest you try another method if you have so many side effects. They might get worst in time.

I don´t know if youév had children, but the mirena IUD is great, as it is a IUD the insertion is better if you have children. Thia IUD has a very low dose of hormones, and it may even supress the period in some cases. It has no side effects at all.
There are also minipills, which I´ve heard they´re great cause they´re made for smokers and breasfeeding women. There are plenty of choices,

Good luck! ;D

Yes, long term use of birth control or even short term use for some individuals can affect there health. Especially if breast cancer runs through your family.
Breast cancer runs through my family and my doctor told me that "They wouldn't recommend birth control for not even 1 year." It screws up your hormones!

i took them for 2 years and recently stopped because they caused me a lot of random aches and sharp pains in my rib, also i was fatigued a lot and felt generally miserable. do not listen to your doctor, those things cause many different cancers, especially liver cancer. take a lot of vitamin C and milk thistle. the best thing to do is stop taking them.
