Someone who likes to walk barefoot, who likes to chew on weeds, who likes to go fishing, who is kind of un-civilized, who has im-proper english, someone who has lived in remote area all their life, (backwoods) someone who is not "street-smart" but "woods smart" you might say.

The term originated some time ago. It was used to describe farmers in general, because their necks were red from working in the sun all day.
