The press often refers to players like Ferrero as "clay court specialists" which always sounds like a cut. As if clay is in some way inferior to other surfaces.

Bacause Roddick is also good playing on grass or carpet. Not only the hard court. Unlike some players who can only achieve good results on clay.

They refer to players like Ferrero as clay-court specialists because Spaniards and generally West Europeans are suited to clay ....and they dont usually perform well on the other surfaces .Well , nobody is actually referred to as hard court specialists because hard courts are the mainstream in tennis - most matches are played on hard courts .

They refer to people who don't play on that type of court often. Such as if a French person was good at playing on a hard court while in France most of the courts are clay. :) -T

Commentators refer this many times, but why should announcers need to do? If players want them to be announced
they I do not see what's the problem with it...

There is no player who admits he cannot play on a any given
surface, even though the same player admits they prefer one
surface over the other.
