The naming of full moons is generally credited to the native americans.
Every month's full moon was given a name relating to some characteristic phenomena or event.

Full Sturgeon Moon - is named for AUGUST FULL MOON. Sturgeon is a large fish which was abundantly caught in this month.

It's what the month of August used to be called, before the calendar "January-February-March-April-May-June-July-August-September-October-November-December" we use now came into play. Now it is used to describe the full moon in August, which happened a few days ago.
