My nephew downloaded something, and now my son's monitor says it doesn't receive a signal from the computer. I've tried different monitors to no avail. Without a monitor, how can I run antispyware or antivirus programs?

Unplug the monitor and see if the test screen comes up. If it does the monitor is good, if not the monitor has a problem.
If the monitor connects to the system via a video card, make sure the monitor is connected firmly to the card. Also make sure the card is in its slot properly within the PC case. Sometime they come unseated and can cause the disconnect.
Do you see ANYTHING at all during the boot process? If so the problem could also be in the BIOS settings.

WHOA NELLY!

Here's what to do

Turn off pc - remove power cable.

Open case

Locate graphics card (it will still have the monitor cable connected to it)

Then - remove and replace the graphics card into the same slot making sure it is firmly (don't push really hard!) home.

Now replace power cable and power up.

You should find all is well. Basically all I think has happened is that the cable has been pulled causing the card to be unseated and so not recognised - the above will sort that out.

You should get a good AV package anyway - AVG is my fave (http://mybranding.info/free.php if you cannot find a link online)

A virus can't break your monitor or graphics card.

Check all the cables very carefully. Open the case and make sure the video card is firmly seated in it's slot.

Do you see anything at all? In partucular do you get the text mode stuff (BIOS) during boot?

It's not a virus, he did something to the port or connection for the monitor, or he jiggled the tower and something came loose..

The best thing to do is to a) seek professional help or to b) reinstall the OS.
For b) just insert the system restoration disk that came with the PC.
