I've lived in Hyde Park for 8 years. I am a life long Boston resident. Fairmont Street is a lovely neighborhood and I would dare say it is probably one of the nicest in HP. I would consider it to be a safe neighborhood. When I was looking at Boston neighborhoods to live in, my broker spefically took my up Fairmont Street because he wanted me to see how lovely some neighborhoods actually are in Hyde Park. Even though its considered Boston, Hyde Park doesn't feel like you are in the city. The surrounding streets are also very nice. Fairmont St is an older part of HP so the houses are a bigger (victorian style).

Hyde Park is also close to all major routes (93, 128, route 1). Boston School are ok.

Like all urban neighborhoods, there are spots of violence/crime. In the eight years I have lived here, there are 2 murders that I know about. Both of which were no where near Fairmont Street.

I just found this on today's Boston.com. It actually shows homicides in Boston. There are only two in Hyde Park.

It is one of the safer areas. However it is close enough to other areas with high crime rates that the problems sometimes spill over to there. It is in general a friendly middle class area with a lot of single family homes and some apartment buildings.

That area is so safe that the mayor of Boston is a resident (of course he always has a police car parked outside his home so he personally doesn't have any problems anyway).
