Hi, I am a student learning English from South Korea.
I have got a one question that I am really curious about.

I did take a English course in Australia last year. We all
candidates were trying to mimic native spreakers's accent,
gesture, and even expression. One day, during the calss
one of my male class mates did say some of words.

"Oh! so fabulous!!!"

and then suddenly my teacher laughed at him so noisily.
She said it bit sounded like a gay.

So Is there something else we should not use to avoid being
thought as a gay?

It's very interesting.
Firstly I would like to say that i am not a gay and also I don't intend to insult homosexual people.

If I made some people feel unpleasant,
I apologize to them. I personally think that understanding a diffrent culture is a part of learning English, That;s the aim why I ask such a strange question.
Actually we Koran People are not used to the Homesexual thing. so I was quite shocked when I saw a gay first time face to face.
One of my teacher was a gay and I didn't notice it before my friend informed me even though I feel the teacher was bit strange in some way.
Now I do understand them, They are not strange just bit different.

thanks for many helps.
and god bless you.

In taibun's defense I don't think he meant to be rude or ignorant.

He doesn't speak English as a first language and doesn't want to use colloquialisms incorrectly. Much like an actor trying to sound like they are from the 18th century, they wouldn't use word's like, 'like' or 'totally'.

I don't think his intention was to be homophobic at all.

So, to answer the question I think I'd just keep my sentences simple. Don't use any fancy words. Here are some examples:

Use 'nice' or 'very nice', instead of 'fab' or 'fabulous'
Say 'pretty' or 'beautiful' instead of 'gorge' or 'gorgeous'
Say something is 'tasty' instead or 'dee-licous' or 'lovely'

As long as you use common speak and be yourself no one will think you sound funny.

Hope that helps!

Matthew

Great job learning English... but here are a few corrections to your question in "quotes"... just for perfecting purposes.

Hi, I am a student learning English from South Korea.
I have got "a" question that I am really curious about.

I did take "an" English course in Australia last year. We all were trying to mimic "a" native spreakers's accent,
gesture"s", and even expression"s". One day, during the "class," one of my male class mates "said,"
"Oh! So fabulous!!!"

and suddenly my teacher laughed at him so noisily.
She said it "sounded a bit gay."

So is there "anything" else we should not "say" to avoid being
thought as gay?

At first I thought your question was insulting to gay people, but after reading the whole question, I get it. Yabazao!!!
Never use the word "pristine". Never say "flaming", "you're so camp", "he's so pretty", and try not to use the word "drag". In fact, never say anything about a man's build or looks. Focus on talk about women.
Gay people are people, too, and some gay people are very intelligent, highly creative, and a lot of fun to be around.
I know that Korean people like to speak in their native tongue, but in order not to appear rude, never talk about an American in an American's presence. We pick up on that kind of thing. It is rude.
My ex-fiance was Korean.
Good luck to you and may God bless you. Yabazao!!!

Ignorant people who want to insult you will you the word "gay" as as insult no matter what you say... it's not necessarily the word "fabulous"... Kids grow up with the idea that "gay" can be used as an insult for anything that they don't like... sometimes they'll say a T.V show or a rule that they disagree with is "gay"...meaning "stupid"... it's wrong and makes kids who may actually BE gay ( meaning homosexual ) feel bad about themselves because after all...nobody want to be labeled a swear word. The correct thing to do is to use whatever words in the English language you want to express yourself and correct people who use the word "gay" for anything other than homosexual or it's original meaning ( no longer used ) "happy"...

Avoid any hint of a lisp as the sound of letter 's' is spoken. Any lilting lispy attempts to draw unneeded attention to the 'hissiness' of any hard 's' sounds spoken in the English language is tantamount to directly soliciting lonely sailors behind rotting piles of hemp on a deserted wharf somewhere in South San Francisco.
In other words, it's just gay as could be.
So,is there something else we should not use to avoid being
thought as a gay?

Yes. Avoid the personal use of any penis other than your very own.

Onyong kay-say-oh.

The English language is sometimes considered a "gender neutral" language. However, their are terms that women use in English that are less frequently used by men. "Fabulous", "Marvelous" and even "Pretty" without a specific context is considered a "feminine" expression. The best way to find out is to see what people's responses are to terms you hear!

Good Luck!

saying " I LOVE C0CK" is a bit gay.

saying "Super" in the style of Big Gay Al from South Park is also gay.

but on the whole these are stereotypes, and you should realize gay people are normal just like everyone else, some may have
a effeminate lilt to their voice but other wise are like anyone.

It depends on how you say the words. Gay men who are feminine usually sound like a man trying to sound like a woman if you will. They have a twang about their speech and say things like baby, honey, *****, etc... Words that straight men wouldn't use, like fabulous. But I wouldn't worry about being being called gay anyway. Your teacher was out of order for saying that.

I'm not sure.

I usually use words, while speaking with English speakers of course, from my lexicon.

Usually those words are...

English, sometimes mixed with a little Yiddish, Spanish, German and French.

I'm not sure if that answered your question, but I am sure that I would tell your teacher that she's a rude....well, fill in the blank.

No, its more of a certain tone that would make someone sound gay, a tone I do not possess. I know you weren't trying to be offensive, but some people get easily offended by your question, I do not, however.

If your looking stereotypes then,

replacing "very" with "über", as in: "that is very pretty" -> "that is über pretty"
