Because they don't care. I have a co-worker that says she sees nothing wrong in celebrating them as long as it's good fun. I can't force to take away that idea from her.

Biggest reason, aside from lack of knowledge is that in North America, the number of holiday days off from work is very low compared to the rest of the industrialized world. Few holidays mean that anytime a holiday comes up, people don't really care about the origins. As employers get rid of more and more holidays, people are more and more desperate for when the next holiday will appear.
Various religions have changed the names of pagan holidays in attempts to gain more followers. Mainly because the pagan holidays were a time of celebration and its tough to get people to not celebrate them anymore.
So as Christmas really is the winter solstice, it was made Christmas to encourage pagans to convert to Christianity.
Most people do not know that the various holidays like Christmas and st Patrick's day are of pagan origin, and you Will also find many people will refuse to believe this when they are told.
Overall holidays in America have become so commercialized that its hard to walk through a neighbourhood without seeing a dozen yard decorations even for the most minor holiday. Holidays now seem to be more about spending money, going to church that one time a year, or eating dinner with family and a bunch of strangers. The irony that our holidays were originally about celebration, and now are more about stress and gifts.

So what? Why do you go to work when you know that your employers are making more money from your efforts than you are? Why do we get up in the morning when we know we're just going to lay back down at night? Why do we eat when we know that ...well, never mind. Why does the "why" of celebrating holidays have to have a reason? Can't we use anyone's holiday to recognize the meaning in something good?

Tradition.
I'm Pagan, by the way, and I really don't care that other religions celebrate. There's nothing wrong with things that bring people together and make them happy.

Because they are fun?
I'm Pagan but we celebrate both the Christian version and the Pagan in our house. Because they are fun!

Holidays are a Tradition that brings familes together. It should not matter who started what holiday as long as you and yours is content in celebrating that holiday and it brings you closer as a family...

people may know their origin but it doesn't necessarily mean that they should stop believing and celebrating an event that makes them happy.
