If someone has to hold their chest when coughing, because of pain or discomfort there, it could well be a sign of serious illness like Tuberculosis (TB) or something similar. Best they should consult a doctor without delay.

If the female is young and buxom, on the other hand, it could be she is trying to prevent her bosom from jiggling, or that she needs to buy a better-fitting bra, because the one she has on, is feeling too tight when she coughs.

It all depends on the circumstances.

You don't hold your chest when you cough. You put your hand over your mouth to help catch the germs not hold your chest.

Hmmmmmmm, I am female, don't hold my chest when I cough. Never have. I wonder if this is normal?
